TELEVISION AND HEALTH – THE BENEFICIAL RHYTHM OF LIFE (INTERRUPTING DETERIORATING CONDITION)

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

How wise it would be to interrupt this deteriorating condition in good time before it takes over one’s being, leading to the need for strong sleeping pills that can become addictive! People who feel overtired should decide to spend their holidays in the country, where they can go on easy excursions and for walks in the forest or woods and the hills or mountains, rather than choosing a travel programme that would involve great strain and effort. They need to breathe deeply in the fresh air, enabling them to feel naturally tired in the evening and so enjoy restful sleep once again. Anyone who thinks that he can get rid of overtiredness by sitting in an armchair all day is mistaken, because he needs more than rest: he needs sufficient exercise and deep-breathing. This will eliminate the tiredness and metabolic wastes from the body. Townsfolk would benefit more from their holidays if, instead of lying around, they helped the farmers make hay and went for short walks, besides eating and drinking well.

MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS – PARASITES, TROPICAL LEECHES AND MOSQUITOES

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

In tropical countries there are many tiny parasites, such as mites, that penetrate the skin and cause cold or hot fevers. I myself once taught such an infection in the tropical jungle and only DDT was able to save my life. These tiny parasites are not visible to the naked eye. They stick to plants and when touched with bare arms or other parts of the body they attach themselves to the skin and enter through the pores. The resulting infection is referred to as ‘cold death’ because the body temperature progressively decreases until life ceases if no help is forthcoming in good time.

When you are roaming through the jungle, leeches may fall from the trees, drop onto you and attach themselves to your skin. These tropical bloodsuckers, however, are not harmless like their cousins in temperate zones, because they can cause blood poisoning. The mosquitoes in those areas are also dangerous and able to transmit malaria. This disease is rampant near the headwaters of the Amazon and no traveller there should dare to sleep without a mosquito net. Even so, these carriers of disease are equipped with a peculiar instinct that enables them to find every chink in a hut and tear in a net and so torment their victims. When I was visiting that area I often discovered some mosquitoes under my net in the morning and, on squashing them, would find them to be full of blood. It could have frightened me, but perhaps I am immune to malaria or the modest quantities of quinine I took to be on the safe side were enough to protect me. In Sri Lanka I came across another type of mosquito dreaded by everyone because it transmits the fateful disease called filariasis, or elephantiasis.

ALMONDS – GENERAL INFORMATION

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Almond puree is a suitable food for babies, and almond milk should be substituted for ordinary cow’s milk in cases of cradle cap. Only very rarely does almond protein not agree with a baby and more than 90 per cent of them tolerate it much better than the protein found in cow’s milk. Many grateful mothers are aware of the fact that it was this milk that helped their babies to overcome cradle cap, as well as gastric and intestinal disturbances. Almond milk, if given regularly, will eventually rectify even the most stubborn disturbances. It is especially beneficial in the spring,, when cow’s milk does not always agree with some babies because the animals feed on fresh grass. Couple almond puree with a good biological calcium preparation and Violaforce in homoeopathic form, and cradle cap will soon disappear in most cases.

Because of their outstanding value and properties, almonds should find an esteemed place in every modern kitchen.

BERRIES – VITAMIN A

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Vitamin A is supplied by various other berries. For example 100 g (about 4 oz) of fresh bilberries (blueberries) contain as much as 1.6 mg of pure vitamin A, and 100 g of blackberries, 0.8 mg. It is clear, then, that during the berry season you need not be solely dependent upon carrot juice and watercress as sources of this vitamin. Various berries will help to meet your daily requirement. This fact should be remembered by all those who suffer from the consequences of vitamin A deficiency, usually showing up in skin diseases, pathological changes in the hair, teeth and nails, softening of the cornea, obesity from glandular dysfunction, night-blindness (nyctalopia) and other conditions.

Although much has been done, said and written about vitamins, the last word on the subject has yet to be spoken. We are today catching a glimpse of the intricate interplay between vitamins, enzymes and hormones. Vitamin B12 is an indispensable component of the yellow respiratory enzyme; vitamin A, the opponent of the thyroid hormones and so on. Hyperthyroidism can thus be checked by eating plenty of food containing vitamin A, such as the berries mentioned above.

QUESTIONS OF NUTRITION – A GOOD NATURAL DIET

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

A good natural diet consists partly of cooked and partly of raw foods. For very serious diseases such as cancer a raw food diet works wonders and is often the only measure that will get to the root of these pathological problems.

The patient who has lost the ability to digest and assimilate his food should begin the diet with juices, then start taking small amounts of finely grated raw vegetables and fruit. Gradually, the quantity is increased until he is able to eat the foods in their natural raw state.

If there is no need to change over to a diet made up entirely of raw food, it would still be beneficial to incorporate small quantities in your daily menus.

Vegetables and fruits should not be served at the same meal, but taken separately, as breaking this rule will mean you are likely to be bothered with flatulence.

On the other hand, in spite of contrary opinions, cereals, organically grown and stone ground if possible, are good companions to both fruit and vegetable dishes.
